The Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS presented by Apex Sports is celebrating 26 consecutive years of racing at Norris Penrose Event Center. The highflying bikes are back and roar into Colorado Springs Saturday June 8th. The SUPERCROSS annually draws one of the largest single day attendance shows at the event center. The capacity crowd brings spectators from all over the region. SUPERCROSS racing has become a worldwide phenomenon. From its humble beginnings in 1972, the sport has enjoyed unprecedented growth, making it the second biggest motor sport event in the USA, topped only by NASCAR. The name SUPERCROSS is recognized by Google as one of the most highly searched motorsport key words in the world!
The Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS is sanctioned and officiated by the SRAC (Sports Riders Association of Colorado) and the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association), rules and regulations available on the www.SRAC.org website.
Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS competitors consist of men and women rider’s ages 4 to 65 from up and down the Front Range and the surrounding state, ranging from beginner riders to Pros. The Amateurs will be battling for trophies and points while the Pro class riders are out of the gate starting at 7pm competing for a cash purse adding up to $5,000.
The Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS Halftime show features the “Dash for Cash.” The fastest pro riders of the night will battle head to head in a one-lap eliminator race. The final winner gets $500 cash.
The SUPERCROSS Track building begins on Wednesday June 5th with six dump trucks working all day to bring in 175 loads of dirt. The bigger obstacles and track start to take shape Thursday. Friday final touches on the jumps, then the whoop section and corners are built then 200 hay bales are placed outlining the course and finally a start and finish gate are installed and the track is complete and ready for Saturday morning SUPERCROSS practice runs. The media is welcome to join us each day during the course of construction to document for viewers and readers how an empty arena transforms into a Pro SUPERCROSS track.
John Murray owner and promoter of the Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS competed in his first SUPERCROSS race at Norris-Penrose Events Center June 1, 1987. John (at age 16) had just moved up from the Novice class to amateurs and was able to race under the lights. 25 years later John still races in the Pro Class and now owns the Pikes Peak SUPERCROSS event, which is the largest SUPERCROSS race in Colorado.
